My company was hit with a never-ending “nuisance” law suit. Our long-time “K Street” lawyer was making no progress however he was making a fortune in hourly fees and if I put up with this “process” I would either have to pay extortion to the plaintiff or go broke paying my lawyer.
At the suggestion of one of my employees, I moved the case to Brian Maul and was immediately amazed at how well he compared and contrasted to my previous lawyer.
It’s easier to just list his many attributes:
1. He is extremely logical and really knows business law. He is intelligent, ethical and easy to work with.
2. He is very cost-efficient and generally produced 2 to 3 times the amount (of superior) work my previous lawyer did on a per hour basis.
3. He got up to speed with the case fast. In less than a month, he knew a lot more about this case than my previous lawyer who had been milking it for over a year.
4. He answered my legal questions fast and to the point. We discussed how we each thought the case should be handled and came to an optimal agreement; that worked!
Brian submitted well targeted briefs. His in court arguments were well received by the judge and the opposing counsel was no match for him. This case was rapidly settled without going to trial.
I never thought that I would compare the work of a lawyer to an artist.. Brian is an artist !
I went to him with a consumer protection issue that I had tried for months to resolve with the manufacturer. When I visited Brian for a consultation, he was empathetic but professional. He clearly explained risk; the length of time such a case could take to resolve (particularly if it were to go trial); realistic expectations, etc.
Fast-forward to the company’s first offer of settlement. I wasn’t happy with it. Brian gave me the positives, but reminded me that the decision was mine. I did not accept the offer, and Brian continued to represent us in the hopes of a better settlement.
Long story short, we just came to a settlement. I’m happy with the settlement. It’s not a case of me bitterly accepting an offer I wasn’t happy about—I’m genuinely satisfied with our settlement.
Brian struck a good balance between communicating often enough to keep us in the loop, but not communicating so frequently that we were paying for meaningless emails. He was available by phone, and returned the (few) calls I made in a reasonable amount of time.
Brian tailored his communication to my comprehension level. If I understood something, he didn’t drone on about it, and if I didn’t understand something, he explained it clearly. If he was going to be occupied/in trial at a time when we were waiting on information, he told me ahead of time so that I didn’t think he was ignoring us.
Summary: It sucks to be in a position where you need a lawyer, but if you need one, Brian’s a good one to have on your side.
So I waited over two weeks with no communication from them just to have him turn me down.
Horrible communication on their end. They outright lied when they said that he would read my email and get back to me. He didn't call me until I'd called a second time over a week later, and he still hadn't read my email. Finally, neither he nor anyone from the office offered any apology or explanation for their poor handling of the situation.
I do not reccommend this attorney. Look elsewhere. He's too busy for you, after all.
