I needed an attorney to represent me in Spring Valley for an Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle in the Third Degree (misdemeanor) summons, and Drove Wrong Way on a One-Way Street (3 point) ticket. This was a 6 year old case, my license was suspended and I had a warrant hanging over my head for not responding.
Unfortunately I've had more criminal and traffic cases then I want to admit in the last 20 years, so naturally I've had my share of attorneys represent me. I live in NYC but I wanted a local lawyer with experience and a good reputation to represent me. I did a lot of research. I read all the reviews and finally found Mr. Brian Berkowitz. As you probably know by now, the reviews on him are top notch. I decided to give him a try.
There is a lot to say about my experience with Brian, but what I really want to say is WOW!!! The best all around representation I have ever received from an attorney on any case!
I was impressed with the way he treated me from start to finish. He made me feel like I was his most important client. I could probably sing his praises for an entire chapter. Simply put, the man is not satisfied with anything less then having his client feel comfortable and confident at every stage of the case; beginning with the initial consultation to the minute you exit the courtroom with the most favorable judgement you could have reasonably hoped for.

The ticket was reduced to a violation with no points and a reasonable fine. My driving record has been clean for a very long time so that most likely helped. Brian is the absolute best person to go to. This was my first ticket, and a bad one as well. I got a speeding ticket for going 96mph in a 55mph zone. I was supposed to get my license suspended just after that one ticket. I had other speeding tickets which didn't help my case but Brian was even able to point me to the right people to take care of my other tickets as well. Any question I ever had he was able to answer for me and even in a timely manner. He was always on top of things and I always had easy access to him. I drive very far to work every day so Brian saved my life. He was able to get the 96 in a 55 speeding ticket dropped down to 60mph in a 55mph and 3 points along with a fine. In comparison to losing my license it couldn't get better than that. Just as I told him, I will not go to anyone else but for ALL of my issues with the law. Do the right thing, call Brian and all of your issues will be taken care of.

That told me that he probably knew everyone on the opposing side, including their strategies, objectives, and the rules governing their conduct. Obviously, other defense attorneys would know these things, but not to the extent of someone who actually lived and worked the prosecution side. My thought was that he would be intimately aware of what was reasonably possible, and what was not possible. In other words, no “pie-in-the-sky” promises that could not be delivered. For me, that was the first key.

Second, I wanted a good communicator. Most lawyers do not communicate well with their clients. They may be great communicators in the courtroom, but try to get them on the phone or to answer an email quickly; Good Luck! Not so with Brian. He took the time to explain in plain language the charges, their ramifications, the possibilities of a lesser charge, and the entire process step by step. I was included in all conferences by phone, received copies of all correspondence, and received regular phone calls to update me on what was happening, and I wasn’t even the client! That is above and beyond the call of duty, and it is what separates a true professional who cares, from a run-of-the-mill lawyer who treats you like just another number.

Third, most attorneys charge by the hour. They give you an estimate, and it is always higher when it’s all over, ALWAYS. This case was pretty straight forward and the flat fee was very reasonable. Obviously, if it had gone to trial, there would have been a daily rate, which is normal. Thankfully, it worked out exactly as Brian had thought it would, and there were no further legal costs. I can not tell you how important that is.

Finally, getting a DWI is a serious matter that could happen to anyone who drinks occasionally and exercises poor judgment by getting behind the wheel, even just one time. But, it is not the end of the world. Brian can help you get through this, so that you can learn your lesson, and get on with your life. Trust me.
